Program Overview

Our Post-Baccalaureate Doctor of Nursing Practice Program (DNP) prepares nurses to be certified and licensed as an Advanced Practice Nurse in order to provide fully accountable and comprehensive care to patients.

After completing the DNP program, nurses will be prepared to conduct complex diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, make use of sophisticated informatics and decision-making technology, and assimilate in-depth knowledge of the biophysical, psychosocial, behavioral, and clinical sciences.

Points of Entry for the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program

Registered Nurses with a BS degree

The Post-BS DNP is a three-year, full-time program for registered nurses interested in an advanced practice that includes a clinical immersion.

Registered Nurses with an MS degree

The program for RNs with an MS degree is a three-year, full-time program that includes a clinical immersion.

Roles You Can Develop

Organizational & Leadership Roles

As a nurse working in organizational settings, you’ll enhance the leadership roles of executive nurses, develop care programs, and influence health care outcomes through your research and findings. Organizational roles can include informatics, public health, nurse education, executive leadership, and health care policy.

Direct Patient Care Roles

You’ll also have the option to pursue advanced practice nursing (APRN) roles. In this setting, you’ll be evaluating and managing care directly to your patients. Roles can include working as a nurse practitioner and clinical nurse specialist.

In addition to our general admission and prerequisite course completion requirements, applicants to the DNP program must also have their Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Nursing and a New York State RN licensure (or be eligible) by the start of the program.

What is the general structure of the program?

The program is configured in a cohort model and includes classroom courses, supervised practice, portfolio development, dissemination of scholarly, peer reviewed work, and a final intensive practicum. The curricular content enables the graduate to make complex diagnoses, provide evidence-based treatment modalities, utilize sophisticated informatics and decision-making technology, and assimilate in-depth knowledge of biophysical, psychosocial, behavioral and clinical sciences. Upon completion of the DNP degree, graduates are eligible for professional certification and state licensure in their advanced practice specialty.
